University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics plans a $95 million renovation and two-story expansion of the John Pappajohn Pavilion on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City.  

The tower would grow from eight to 10 stories, adding a total of 38,000-sf of new construction and renovating an additional 52,000-sf at an anticipated cost of $50.4 million. The new level nine will house a 24-bed intensive care unit. The new level 10 will be a mechanical penthouse. 

Floors seven and eight would also be renovated. The renovation will include new labor and delivery and postpartum OB/GYN care spaces.  

IMEG will provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and technology engineering design services and medical equipment planning for the project. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2023.  

The expansion is part of a 10-year plan for UIHC’s main campus, which also includes a new $1 billion medical tower.  

Des Moines-based RDG Planning & Design will supply architectural design services.
