Lion House at Lincoln Park Zoo wins best project, preservation awards
The Lincoln Park Zoo Pepper Family Wildlife Center recently received multiple awards: ENR Midwest’s 2022 Regional Best Projects in the Cultural/Worship category and the 2022 Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award for Rehabilitation and the Richard H. Driehaus Legacy Award, as well as the Commission on Chicago Landmarks’ 2022 Preservation Excellence Award. IMEG provided commissioning services for the $41 million renovation, restoration, and expansion of the lion house, which was originally constructed in 1912. The landmark is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The project renovated the building’s great hall, lion keeper support spaces, lion holding cages, conference room, and offices and expanded the outdoor lion habitat, which was designed based on years of behavioral data monitoring and is intended to encourage species-specific activity while offering a great view of the animals.
