New I-74 bridge wins Structural Engineering Excellence Award
The I-74 Bridge over the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities won the National Council of Structural Engineers Association’s 2022 Structural Engineering Excellence Award in the New Bridges or Transportation Structures category.
The bridge received the top honor of “Outstanding Project” in the category. Recipients of the award were the project’s prime structural engineering firms, Alfred Benesch & Company and Modjeski and Masters.
Construction on the Interstate 74 Bridge Corridor Project, which spans the Mississippi River in the Quad-Cities between Moline, Ill., and Bettendorf, Iowa, began in 2017. The new bridge structure features dual basket-handle arch bridges with main channel spans of 800 feet. The bridges support six lanes in each direction, including an outboard bicycle and pedestrian path.
IMEG’s construction engineering, materials testing, and inspection teams provided services on multiple components of the overall corridor project, which in addition to the replacement of the bridge included eight miles of corridor improvements.
The bridge also was one of 12 national finalists for the 2022 America’s Transportation Awards, presented by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The project previously won the Quality of Life/Community Development ($200 million-plus) category for the Midwest Region.
