Two IMEG projects are among ENR Midwest’s Best Projects for 2023

Book Depository

The Book Depository in Detroit was named the Best Renovation/Restoration project.

Vacant since 1987, the building was renovated and reopened as Newlab’s Detroit headquarters.

It’s the first phase of renovation for the Michigan Central Station property, a Detroit railway station Ford Motor Company bought in 2018. The 273,240-sf Book Depository, designed by Albert Kahn in 1936, had previously served as a post office and book storage for Detroit Public Schools.

IMEG provided structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, technology, and acoustical engineering design and architectural lighting for the project, as a subconsultant to Gensler.

National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility

The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility in Manhattan, Kan., was named Best Project in the Government/Public Building category.

The first-in-the-U.S. facility features highest-level biocontainment laboratories and safety protocols for scientists to study and diagnose critical animal diseases.

The new 48-acre, 700,000-sf campus is near Kansas State University and many animal health companies. The 500,000-sf main building houses animal containment laboratories and holding facilities, office, and facility support space. Specialized safety systems include redundant high efficiency particulate air filter and waste decontamination systems.

IMEG provided structural and security engineering for the project, which will replace the 68-year-old Plum Island Animal Disease Center in New York.

IMEG also provided design for an award of merit recipient in the Renovation/Restoration category: The Belden-Stratford in Chicago.

The renovation of the 16-story building that was originally constructed in 1923 restored the historic building, which includes 209 luxury apartment units, and added new amenities, such as a mezzanine-level lounge, fitness center, billiards and media lounge, wine tasting room, conference rooms, and a rooftop deck. IMEG provided MEP and fire protection design.
