New Garden
IMEG’s lighting design team (Illuminating Concepts) provided both interior and exterior lighting design and control system design for the Founder’s Garden. The garden is a tribute to Herbert H. Dow, featuring a central sculpture of Dow himself and five distinct walls symbolizing the key chemical elements — chlorine, bromine, magnesium, sodium, and calcium — that formed the foundation of the company. Each wall is illuminated with soft, focused lighting, which enhances the inscriptions of H.H. Dow’s quotes and excerpts from writings about his life and legacy, allowing visitors to engage with the history in an intimate, reflective way.
The H.H. Dow statue, located in the heart of the Rotunda Plaza, is surrounded by a ring of bricks salvaged from the 47 Building, which once stood on this very site. The plaza, spanning 70 feet in diameter, is illuminated with a combination of accent lighting and soft washes of light that highlight both the statue and the architectural details of the surrounding walls.
At night, the entire site comes alive through thoughtfully placed landscape lighting, casting a warm, welcoming glow over the abundant plantings. This lighting not only showcases the features of the Founder’s Garden but also creates a harmonious atmosphere, inviting visitors to explore the site at all hours while honoring the historical significance of the space.
