Road Safety Audit

The project: The Road Safety Audit (RSA) program, managed by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) through the Community Connectivity Grant Program, focuses on identifying opportunities to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in selected areas of Connecticut. Led by IMEG, the team is tasked with collecting and analyzing existing condition data, conducting in-person walk audits with relevant state and local staff, and compiling a comprehensive set of recommendations. The deliverables include detailed concept plan graphics and maps to effectively communicate the study’s findings and proposed improvements. These audits are designed to serve as the foundation for securing funding and initiating safety improvements through the Community Connectivity Program.
The goal: The primary goal of the RSA program is to improve the safety and accessibility of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure across Connecticut. By conducting thorough assessments and developing actionable recommendations, the program aims to guide communities toward safer, more walkable, and bike-friendly environments. The RSAs are also intended to serve as the first step in securing project funding through the Community Connectivity Grant Program, ultimately facilitating the implementation of recommended improvements.
Design approach: The design approach for the RSA program involves a systematic process of data collection, analysis, and collaboration. FHI Studio (IMEG) begins by gathering data on existing conditions in the study area, followed by a walk audit conducted with local and state staff to observe and document potential safety hazards. This collaborative process ensures
that local knowledge and expertise are incorporated into the audit. After the walk audit, the team compiles the findings into a visually rich report, featuring concept plans and maps that clearly communicate the proposed improvements. The approach emphasizes clear communication and feasibility, ensuring that the recommendations are both realistic and aligned with the community’s needs.
Project outcome: The outcome of the RSA program is a series of in-depth safety audits that provide CTDOT and local municipalities with actionable recommendations for improving pedestrian and bicycle safety. These audits are critical in helping communities secure funding and move forward with infrastructure improvements. To date, FHI Studio (IMEG) has led over two dozen RSAs, significantly contributing to the safety and accessibility of various communities across Connecticut. The program has successfully laid the groundwork for future safety enhancements, with many of the proposed recommendations being implemented through funding from the Community Connectivity Grant Program.
