Gymnasium Seismic Rehabilitation (SRGP)
The project: Perform a full seismic rehabilitation of Baker Middle School’s historic 1934 gymnasium, a prominent unreinforced masonry structure, while preserving its original architectural character.
The goal: Strengthen the structural integrity of the gymnasium to meet Oregon Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program (SRGP) standards without compromising its historic appearance and within the limits of the awarded funding.
Project features: Given the building’s age and historical value, the project required specialized care in both technical design and preservation strategy. IMEG ensured that no visible aspects of the building’s historic exterior were altered while integrating modern seismic strengthening systems.
Design approach: Our team provided a comprehensive, hands-on approach from initial assessment through project completion. Beginning with a detailed seismic evaluation in 2020, the team developed rehabilitation documents tailored to SRGP requirements. They partnered closely with the District through every phase—planning, design, permitting, bidding, and construction administration—to ensure compliance, clarity, and momentum throughout the project timeline.
Key elements of the team’s design and management strategy included:
- Preparing and submitting documents for review by the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office to safeguard the building’s historic character.
- Collaborating with the District on contractor selection to ensure the chosen builder understood and respected the project’s preservation and performance goals.
- Providing weekly on-site representation during construction, ensuring consistent oversight and responsiveness to any field conditions or construction questions.
- Prioritizing materials and construction techniques common to the Baker City region to maintain compatibility with the existing structure and ensure long-term durability.
Structural, Seismic The seismic rehabilitation of the Baker Middle School Gymnasium was completed successfully, fulfilling every commitment made to the District. IMEG maintained the historic aesthetic of the gymnasium while delivering a safer and more resilient facility. The project was completed within the SRGP award amount, meeting all funding requirements and preserving the full value of the grant for the District. Through detailed planning, active coordination, and weekly site engagement, the team ensured the structure is now prepared to withstand seismic events without sacrificing its identity as a community landmark.
