Stadium Expansion
The project: Wichita State University is moving forward with a four-phase, $19.85 million plan to upgrade Wilkins Stadium into one of the top collegiate softball venues in the country. The first phase, a $9.65 million project, will address long-standing space and facility needs by adding a new 12,000-sf team building and a 14,400-sf indoor training facility on the west side of the stadium. IMEG is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural engineering design for this phase, which will give the softball program modern, functional space for training, academics, nutrition, and recovery.
The new team building will feature a larger, more functional locker room for players, coaches’ locker rooms, athletic training and rehab areas, a classroom, team meeting room, staff offices, a work room, break room, laundry, and locker rooms for umpires. The indoor training facility will house a full infield, retractable batting cages, a video replay area, and storage, allowing the team to train year-round regardless of weather conditions.
The design: The building systems are designed for efficiency and long-term durability, with HVAC equipment that meets ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC standards. Variable air volume rooftop units with hot water reheat serve most areas, while baseboard heat provides comfort in spaces with large windows. The indoor training facility takes a different approach, using single-zone VAV ground-mounted rooftop units. To improve performance, exhaust fans and intake louvers allow free cooling when outdoor conditions are favorable. Plumbing includes a central gas-fired hot water system with recirculation, along with a variable-flow domestic water booster pump and natural gas service for both the practice facility and the team operations center. Water softeners are provided for the operations center. Fire protection is delivered through a full NFPA 13 wet-pipe sprinkler system. Electrical service comes from a new pad-mounted transformer and supports LED lighting with occupancy-based controls, along with integrated audiovisual, IT, and security systems.
The (expected) outcome: As of early 2025, the steel frame for the indoor facility is nearly complete, with substantial completion targeted for March and full delivery planned before the end of 2025. Phase 1 sets the stage for future upgrades—including new seating, concourses, press and media facilities, and fan amenities—that will strengthen the student-athlete experience, support recruiting, and build on Wichita State’s reputation as a national contender in softball.
