The project: Provide retro-commissioning and energy optimization services for multiple high-performance healthcare and research facilities on the University of Nebraska Medical Center
(UNMC) Omaha campus.

The goal: Identify and resolve persistent system deficiencies
left unaddressed by the original commissioning process, while implementing energy-saving strategies to enhance operational efficiency across several mission-critical buildings.

Project scope: IMEG provided retro-commissioning (RCx), functional performance testing, energy optimization strategies, and third-party Performance Commissioning for several advanced facilities on the UNMC campus. These included:

  • Davis Global Center
  • Durham Research Center
  • Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
  • Lauritzen Outpatient Center
  • Michael Sorrell Center
  • Pharmacy Drug Discovery Building

Project approach: IMEG partnered closely with UNMC facilities staff to perform targeted RCx services, focused on uncovering and addressing long-standing system issues – particularly those affecting building static pressure imbalances. The team conducted detailed performance testing, pinpointed root causes of equipment and control malfunctions, and provided technical guidance and staffing support to implement corrective actions. Post-RCx, IMEG introduced tailored energy optimization strategies and monitored building performance to verify savings using energy metering.

Challenge: Unresolved system deficiencies from initial commissioning efforts were causing performance issues in critical healthcare and research environments. Solution: Our team leveraged its in-depth commissioning expertise to isolate problem areas, optimize mechanical systems, and restore proper function – ensuring reliable operation in spaces that house some of the most advanced biomedical technology in the world.

Project outcome: The Performance Commissioning and optimization efforts enhanced system performance, reduced energy usage, and improved environmental conditions across multiple campus buildings – helping UNMC maintain its reputation for cutting-edge research, education, and patient care in a more energy-efficient and reliable manner.
