The IMEG-designed monumental staircase at the Marriott International Headquarters in Bethesda, MD, won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Specialized Structural Elements from the Structural Engineers Association – Metropolitan Washington (SEA-MW) Excellence in Structural Engineering competition. The awards honor outstanding achievements by structural engineering firms based in the Washington DC region and acknowledges projects that demonstrate exceptional innovation, creativity, and constructability.

IMEG provided structural engineering design for the featured stair in the building’s lobby, which appears to be floating with very little structural support. Engineers solved challenges such as the thin profile, cantilevered glass guardrails supported by structural treads in lieu of stringers, and concealed fire sprinklers that required close collaboration among the entire design team and manufacturers.
