IMEG’s Jason Rice and Mark Bellon will present “Mullan Area Case Study: Stormwater Management Strategy for Master Planning” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 3, at the Montana Stormwater Conference in Missoula.

Their presentation will cover how the civil team involved in the Mullan Area Master Plan was able to keep the project on track and accommodate the infrastructure needs of a 2,000-acre area in Missoula County despite significant challenges of location, stormwater integration, and COVID-19.

IMEG teamed with Dover, Kohl & Partners to develop the conceptual stormwater management solutions utilizing green infrastructure in coordination with the development of the Conceptual Illustrative Master Plan. This plan included the restoration of Grant Creek, the stormwater base map for the study area that included drainage basins, site condition research for soils and groundwater, preliminary routing analysis to identify natural drainage courses, and limited stormwater routing assessment for the area, and a drainage limitations map.

The site presented significant challenges related to stormwater and maximized density due to proximity to the airport influence area. IMEG developed the Stormwater Management Strategy and presented findings to the group, overcoming the area’s stormwater integration challenges.

The team also provided local support for additional meetings that arose during the project and helped find solutions that maximized the development potential for the site’s outer limits. Unfortunately, the public input period was derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic shut-down, but the team quickly pivoted to provide a platform for virtual public charrettes to engage the public and garner the community involvement necessary for the project to remain on schedule.
