South Coast Rail earns ENR New England 2025 Best Project Award of Merit

The South Coast Rail project in Massachusetts has been recognized with an ENR New England 2025 Best Project Award of Merit in the Airport/Transit category.
IMEG provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering for this transformative commuter rail initiative, which extends service to Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford on the Fall River/New Bedford Line—formerly the Middleborough/Lakeville Line.
The project included five on-grade open commuter rail platforms and two crew buildings.
IMEG’s work included:
Electrical
- New electrical services and coordination with utility companies
- New emergency generator systems
- Exterior platform lighting and parking lot lighting to MBTA standards
- Power to VMS, vending machines, elevators, and misc electrical heat
- New EV charging stations
- Power to prefab communication “huts” 10-foot by 10-foot walk-in metal buildings
- Fire alarm systems as required.
Mechanical
- Heating for selected rooms at the stations
- HVAC for crew buildings
Plumbing
- Bathrooms, kitchenettes, floor and roof drains in crew buildings
- Drainage and sump pumps in elevator pits
FP included
- Bathrooms, kitchenettes, floor and roof drains in crew buildings
- Drainage and sump pumps in elevator pits
For the first time in 65 years, cities and towns in southeastern Massachusetts have passenger rail access, reconnecting the region to Boston. Service officially began on March 24, 2025. The South Coast Rail project not only restores vital transit connections but also supports economic development and access to jobs across southeastern Massachusetts.
