The project: Seismic rehabilitation and structural strengthening of the La Grande High School Auditorium, including upgrades to the main entrance lobby and roof.

The goal: Improve the seismic resiliency and structural integrity of the 50-year-old auditorium to meet current safety standards, while minimizing disruption and preserving the existing architectural elements where possible.

Project scope: IMEG was brought on by the District in 2022 to lead the final design and construction phase of the La Grande High School Auditorium Seismic Rehabilitation project. Although the SRGP award was secured by another firm, the District selected our team to carry the project forward based on our proven success with SRGP-funded work and our reputation for developing innovative, cost-effective strengthening solutions. The firm was also trusted to serve as the District’s Project Manager, providing leadership and guidance through construction.

Design approach: The primary challenge was strengthening the existing heavy timber bowstring trusses spanning the auditorium. IMEG applied advanced analysis techniques to assess the trusses and determine the most efficient reinforcement strategy, ultimately reducing the amount of work and cost required. This strategic approach ensured structural performance while conserving project funds.

Structural upgrades extended beyond the auditorium. The mechanical mezzanine above the main entrance lobby required additional bracing, which was achieved by installing new plywood shear walls. To deliver the most cost-effective solution, our team specified plywood sheathing on the ceiling of the lobby. This not only provided the necessary structural support, but also prompted updated ceiling finishes and lighting to integrate the improvement seamlessly with the lobby’s interior.

During construction, finishes on the lobby walls and floors, along with existing display cabinets, were impacted. These were replaced with updated materials and modern design elements to refresh the space.

Additionally, the project included re-roofing the auditorium. Plywood sheathing was added over the original straight decking to meet seismic performance goals, providing another layer of structural resilience to the building.

Project outcome: The La Grande High School Auditorium now benefits from discreet but significant seismic upgrades, delivered through a creative and cost-conscious approach. The structural enhancements, modernized lobby finishes, and new roofing system extend the life of the facility while improving safety and functionality for students, staff, and visitors.
