The project: Replacement of the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing the needs of one of the busiest transit hubs in Manhattan. Serving as a crucial connection for commuters from New Jersey, southern New York State, and eastern Pennsylvania, along with intercity bus services, the PABT plays a vital role in regional transportation.

The goal: To replace and modernize the Port Authority Bus Terminal, ensuring it meets the growing demands of commuters and facilitates efficient transit operations. The goal is also to create a more functional, accessible, and sustainable transportation hub that will serve the region for years to come, improving the experience for passengers and transit agencies alike.

Design approach: The design approach incorporates both technical and community-focused strategies. IMEG is leading the public outreach efforts, including public hearings in New York and New Jersey, and developing communications tools such as websites, fact sheets, and video content to ensure widespread engagement. The team also focuses on bus operations, terminal design, and facility planning. Additionally, interim operational strategies are being developed to maintain transit efficiency during construction. Coordination with transit agencies is key to ensuring smooth operations, while an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is being developed to assess the potential effects of the project.

Project outcome: A successful development of a new Port Authority Bus Terminal that will enhance capacity, improve operational efficiency, and meet the needs of a diverse range of commuters. The collaboration with stakeholders and transit agencies will ensure that the terminal is designed with their needs in mind, while the public outreach efforts will help to inform and involve the community throughout the process. Once complete, the new terminal will provide a modern, functional space that supports regional transportation networks.
