The project: The Memphis Shelby County Airport underwent a master planning process to determine their future growth and expansion needs. As part of this study, it was determined that the B-Concourse, the largest of the three concourses at the Memphis Shelby County Airport should be modernized and enlarged. IMEG provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the renovation and addition to the airport. The existing concourse is approximately 387,000-sf and the project added approximately 140,000-sf to provide approximately 527,000-sf in the modernized concourse.

The goal: Modernize and enlarge the existing concourse.

Project approach: IMEG worked with facilities staff to determine the condition and capacities of existing equipment and integrate new systems with existing systems for central plant equipment and building automation systems. New systems were designed to improve occupant comfort, provide for high energy performance, and upgrade aging infrastructure elements. The team also provided programming, schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding assistance, and construction phase support. The design team also solicited an independent peer review by another national MEP transportation engineer.

Challenge: Structural requirements of the building and limited space available for MEP infrastructure. Solution: These items were resolved through careful and creative coordination, developing mechanical rooms on the apron level and routing systems up to the concourse to supply the space.

Challenge: Maintain the budget identified by the owner. Solution: The team provided several cost iterations occurred during the project.

The outcome: The modernized concourse provides a world-class facility to replace the outdated concourse and improve the passenger experience.
