The project: IMEG provided landscape architecture services for the complete site design of a new pre-K to fourth grade school on an existing school site, exploring multiple building alignments to identify the optimal layout. IMEG played a crucial role in assisting with an Article 97 land parcel swap, facilitating the transition between park and school jurisdiction.

The goal: The goal of the project was to create a dynamic and educational outdoor environment that would enhance the learning experience for students while also serving the broader community. The design aimed to integrate sustainable practices, maximize the site’s natural features, and ensure accessibility for all users.

The design: The hillsides on the site provided unique opportunities to create outdoor classrooms and interactive learning spaces. A stadium seating area was incorporated to offer teachers a dedicated space for outdoor instruction. The main playground took advantage of the site’s natural slope, incorporating slides and scrambling play facilities — an area that remains accessible to the community beyond school hours. A separate pre-K entrance was designed with a vibrant, active play area tailored to younger children.

Sustainability: Sustainable site design was a key focus, with stormwater management seamlessly integrated into the landscape. Additionally, several mature trees were preserved throughout the site, both in the design phase and during construction, ensuring the maintenance of the natural environment.

The outcome: The thoughtful design of the school site successfully balances education, play, and sustainability. By preserving natural features and incorporating engaging outdoor learning spaces, the project enhances the student experience while fostering a lasting connection between the school and the surrounding community.
