The project: Connecticut Children’s Medical Center engaged IMEG’s healthcare information technology (HIT) advisory services team to strategize, advise, and identify information technology solutions to support their new, 197,500-sf, eight-story bed tower expansion and 30,000-sf renovation project.

HIT goal: Create a plan to ensure the project’s design supported not only the current technology needs of the new facility, but also future technology needs, owner goals, and all end-user requirements.

Design aproach: The design process included a current-state assessment to understand present challenges with the environment, future-state visioning to identify future end user requirements, and a technology road map aligned to the construction schedule. Additionally, IMEG developed an initial technology program, a detailed budget strategy, and participated in DD and CD phases for the new tower.

Project scope: The HIT scope of work included:

  • 50 NICU private rooms
  • 12 acuity adaptable rooms
  • 8 ACGT rooms
  • 6 LDRP suites
  • 2 Fetal ORs
  • Lab
  • Pharmacy
  • Simulation lab
  • Administrative services
  • Dietary services
  • Cafeteria
  • Conferencing Center

Challenge: Connecticut Children’s Medical Center encouraged the planning and design team to start from a blank slate when designing and selecting the information technology for the addition—clarifying that the addition will include all-new information technology and equipment.

Solutions: IMEG’s HIT advisory team identified all healthcare information technology required to support the new state-of-the-art facility, including:

  • Alternative reality (AR)
  • Virtual reality (VR)
  • Extended reality (ER)
  • Ambient voice recognition (in-room)
  • Digital solutions (art, white boards, wayfinding)
  • Kiosks
  • Mobile communications and devices (phones, tablets, etc.)
  • Patient education/ entertainment systems
  • Robotics
  • RTLS/RFID
  • Tele-Health
  • Wireless technologies

Expected outcome: The expansion and renovation project will help enable Connecticut Children’s to continue to be an industry leader for pediatrics within the New England area and provide patients with the utmost care, The project is estimated to be completed in 2025.
