The project: IMEG, collaborated with the City of New Britain’s Department of Public Works to develop an interpretive signage program aimed at enhancing the downtown area. This project involved creating an engaging, educational walking tour that highlights the rich history of New Britain. The signage program includes detailed text, route mapping, and active participation in public outreach to ensure community engagement and involvement.

The goal: To create a Historic Signage Walking Tour that would celebrate New Britain’s history and bring vibrancy to the downtown area. The project was developed in response to a Preserve America Grant from the National Parks Service, with the objective of encouraging people to explore downtown on foot. This initiative aimed to support local businesses by increasing foot traffic and to provide visitors and residents with a deeper understanding of the city’s heritage.

Design approach: The design approach focused on creating an informative, accessible, and engaging experience for those exploring the city. The walking tour was divided into three distinct loops, all starting at Central Park. Each loop was strategically designed to highlight key historical landmarks and interesting facts about New Britain’s past. The team worked on developing clear, concise, and captivating text for the signage, ensuring it was both informative and appealing to a wide audience. Additionally, route mapping was created to guide participants along the paths and encourage exploration of downtown’s points of interest. Public outreach was a key component of the process, with efforts aimed at involving the local community and gathering feedback to refine and improve the program.

Project outcome: The Historic Signage Walking Tour was successfully launched, offering a dynamic way for residents and visitors to experience New Britain’s history while walking through the downtown area. The program not only helped bring attention to the city’s historical significance but also encouraged economic vitality by increasing foot traffic to local businesses. The interpretive signage, combined with the route mapping and public involvement, created an informative and enjoyable tour that contributes to the cultural and economic growth of downtown New Britain.
