The project: IMEG partnered with Winding Trails, Inc. to develop a master plan for its lakefront area, a distinctive recreational landscape in central Connecticut. The site is uniquely defined by a sandy beach bordered by a dense, shaded grove, creating a rare and valued natural setting.

The goal: To create a ten-year guiding framework for the organization’s directors that balances protection of the lakefront’s unique natural resources with thoughtfully planned improvements to enhance member experience.

Planning approach: IMEG led a collaborative planning process that included four facilitated workshops with members and directors. Through these sessions, the design team guided discussions, evaluated needs, and built consensus around future improvements, ensuring the plan reflected the priorities of a diverse stakeholder group.

Project outcome: The master plan outlines a series of carefully sited improvements, including a new boathouse, community building, circulation enhancements, and an elevated boardwalk. Key elements include a new 3,000-square-foot picnic deck with a boathouse below, a new community/restroom building, and an updated circulation plan. When fully implemented, the plan will protect the lakefront’s distinctive character while sensitively introducing new amenities that support recreation and long-term stewardship.
