The project: IMEG’s lighting team, Illuminating Concepts, provided comprehensive interior and exterior lighting design for the new North Terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The terminal, which opened on September 17, 2008, replaced the outdated Berry and Smith Terminals that were in need of revitalization compared to Northwest’s McNamara Terminal.

The goal: The primary goal of the North Terminal project was to create a modern and contemporary travel experience for passengers using non-SkyTeam carriers. The design needed to align with the aesthetic and operational standards set by the neighboring McNamara Terminal while introducing updated retail and dining options in an inviting environment.

Scope of Work: Our team delivered a strategic lighting design that enhanced both the interior and exterior spaces of the 824,000-sf terminal. The lighting scope included:

  • Natural Light Integration: Leveraging expansive windows to maximize natural light, contributing to reduced energy costs and an open, welcoming ambiance.
  • Architectural Lighting: Highlighting key design features through thoughtfully placed fixtures, adding depth and focus to architectural elements.
  • Accent Lighting: Introducing dynamic accent lighting to retail and dining areas, bringing vibrancy and a sense of place.
  • Operational Efficiency: Balancing aesthetic appeal with functional lighting solutions to support day-to-day airport operations.

The outcome: Despite a tight budget of $430 million, the North Terminal achieved a visually stunning and highly functional environment. The interplay of light, color, and finishes elevated the passenger experience while maintaining efficiency and sustainability. The terminal not only met but exceeded expectations, setting a new standard for airport design in the region.
