New Canal Dock Boathouse
With the demolition of the historic Yale Adee Boathouse across New Haven Harbor from Canal Dock for I-95 improvements, the new Canal Dock boathouse integrates modern design elements and functionality within the historic context of its setting. IMEG has been involved with this project since its commencement, providing MEP/FP design to demolition and rebuilding activities of the boathouse and harbor point, known as Canal Dock. Additionally, IMEG designed the lighting for the waterfront promenade, boat storage, transient slips, and community recreational space.
Built upon concrete slab-on-piers cantilevered over the water, the 32,000-sf boathouse is a two-story modern glass building featuring rowing machines, on-water community rowing, kayaking, sailing, interior and exterior museum exhibits, and event spaces all protected by break-away wall units designed to absorb the impact of Hurricane-Sandy-strength storm impacts. The Boathouse at Canal Dock serves to reconnect the community to its shore and encourages public-access to the harbor, the use of recreational watercraft, and opportunities for environmental, cultural and historical programming.
