The project: IMEG provided landscape architecture services to design a common roof deck for the five luxury condominium units at Hooper Mansion located at 448 Beacon Street. When it was constructed in 1889, the building was one of the largest buildings in Back Bay, and it was commissioned as a private residence for Robert C. Hooper and his wife.

The goal: The aim was to honor the rich architectural period details while bringing it to the 21st century modern living.

The design: The design for the roof deck echoes the richness of the past in material selection and pattern of the pavers while giving it a contemporary flair with site furnishings and accessories. The central diamond weave paving pattern mimics a luxurious rug, and the comfortable lounge seating – positioned to offer unobstructed views of the Charles River Basin – encourages socialization. Four cherry trees in planters frame the space and provide seasonal interest, and the rest of the planting is inspired by French parterre gardens with low clipped boxwood hedges providing visual interest for the units above. Offsetting the road noise, a fountain amidst a bed of English roses provides a tranquil soothing sound. Up-lighting of the trees, path lighting, and the fireplace – which doubles as a coffee table – offer the perfect ambience for evening get-togethers or hosting private parties.

The outcome: The final rooftop space successfully merges historic charm with modern luxury, offering residents a tranquil and visually striking retreat above the city. The combination of thoughtfully selected materials, elegant planting, and flexible furnishings results in a sophisticated, multi-functional space ideal for relaxation or entertaining.
