New Elementary School
The project: This project involved the complete site design for a new K-5 elementary school, built on the site of an existing school.
The goal: The design sought to create a campus that fosters immersive learning through interaction with the natural landscape. Situated near the Ipswich watershed, the project emphasized ecological sensitivity and aimed to blend play and education within a cohesive outdoor environment.
The design: The centerpiece of the site is a terraced amphitheater with a seamlessly integrated accessible ramp, leading to a central stage beneath a pergola – serving as a multifunctional hub for both learning and play. Stormwater management is addressed through a dry streambed that filters runoff from the surface parking lot into a rain garden, supporting sustainability goals. Additional features include age-specific play areas, a courtyard, outdoor classroom and dining space, hard courts, and open fields.
The outcome: The completed site functions as a vibrant educational landscape that supports both the school and the surrounding community. By thoughtfully integrating environmental elements with engaging outdoor spaces, the design offers year-round flexibility for learning, recreation, and neighborhood use during evenings and weekends.
