New Fertilizer Bulk Storage
The project: After a major windstorm damaged part of Intrepid Potash’s facility in Carlsbad, NM, the company needed a more sustainable storage solution. IMEG assisted in evaluating options and ultimately supported the selection and implementation of a dome storage system.
The goal: Provide a durable and efficient storage solution that enhances product separation and integrates with the facility’s existing tunnel system.
Project features: The new storage system consists of six domes, strategically constructed to replace the previous flat storage method. These domes house two different product lines—sylvite/potash and langbeinite—in three different associated sizes, ensuring the necessary separation for operational efficiency. The total storage capacity across all domes is 175,000-tons.
Design approach: IMEG worked closely with Intrepid Potash to coordinate the dome construction while ensuring seamless integration with the existing tunnel system. The project also involved detailed coordination of mechanical and structural steel systems, as well as other essential civil structures to support the new storage facilities.
Project outcome: The dome storage system provides a long-term, sustainable solution that improves durability and operational efficiency. By replacing flat storage with domes, Intrepid Potash has enhanced product separation while maintaining the structural integrity of its facility, ensuring continued productivity and resilience against environmental challenges.
