New High School

The project: The new Billerica Memorial High School in Billerica, MA is a 325,000-sf, state-of-the-art educational facility.
Project amenities: Designed to serve as a vibrant hub for education and community life, the campus includes a wide range of academic, artistic, athletic, and civic amenities. Notable features include an auditorium, black-box theater, 17,000-sf gymnasium, specialized labs and tech spaces, as well as comprehensive outdoor recreational facilities.
The goal: The goal of the project was to create a modern, integrated educational environment that supports hands-on learning, fosters community pride, and enhances accessibility and connectivity throughout the town center. A critical part of the mission was to reunite school and civic facilities on a pedestrian-friendly campus, while also restoring Billerica’s athletic identity by relocating the high school sports stadium back to its rightful place on campus.
Scope of work: IMEG was responsible for the plumbing and fire protection engineering design services, which included fire service systems, wet and dry sprinklers, standpipes, process control design, and coordination with utility companies for gas loads and tie-ins. IMEG also oversaw construction administration and commissioning plans.
Site design: IMEG designed the site with a pedestrian-oriented circulation system that links the high school with the existing Town Hall, Police and Fire Stations, and the local skating rink. A central “town green” commons forms the heart of the campus, surrounded by walkways and gathering spaces.
Athletic facilities: The athletic component includes a multi-sport synthetic turf field, a six-lane urethane track, a 1,600-seat bleacher with press box, and under-bleacher amenities such as restrooms, concessions, and ticket booths. The stadium is designed with LED lighting and is centrally located for accessibility and visibility.
The outcome: The completed high school campus now serves as a unified educational and civic center that promotes community engagement and school spirit. The return of the Indian’s stadium to the high school campus reestablished a strong sense of pride for Billerica’s student-athletes and local sports fans. The thoughtful integration of pedestrian spaces and community facilities ensures a welcoming and accessible environment, while the high-performance infrastructure supports both safety and sustainability goals.
