IMEG provided structural engineering and design services for the new Courtyard by Marriott hotel project in Santa Cruz. The project consists of a 160,000-sf, four-story hotel building featuring 150 guest rooms and classified as a Type IIIA building over Type I parking garage. The hotel was designed using fire-retardant treated lumber at the exterior walls on the upper four levels, which allows the builder to use cost effective light framed wood construction. Post-tensioned concrete, mild steel concrete slabs, concrete columns over a concrete mat foundation, drilled displacement columns were utilized in this project. Large open areas on the first floor for meeting and conference rooms, a theater, and the lobby with a full bar and kitchen necessitated the use of post-tensioned beams spanning up to 52-ft over the ballroom, and steel beam framing to support 3 stories of guest rooms over the lobby. The second floor features an outdoor pool and spa.
