IMEG provided structural engineering and design services for the new 700,000-sf Terranea Resort and Spa in Rancho Palos Verdes. Sitting along the coastline just south of Los Angeles, the 102-acre site is home to a new 582-room, Mediterranean-style Resort. In addition to the main hotel, separate structures on the site include a dramatic cliff top bar called Nelson’s, a fitness center, a luxurious spa, a specialty restaurant called Mar’sel, and the Cielo Point Pool and Cabana.

The structural design of the main hotel consists primarily of concrete and steel construction. Residential hotel wings consist of two-way post-tensioned concrete flat slabs and special reinforced concrete shear walls on spread foundations. The hotel lobby, meeting areas, and ballrooms are comprised of a combination of concrete post-tensioned or mild reinforced two-way slab designs at lower levels with structural steel framing above. Lateral systems in these areas consist of special reinforced concrete shear walls, special steel concentric braced frames, or special steel moment resisting frames.
