The project: The Novant Health Medical Center is a significant addition to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region, featuring a new 48-bed community hospital and a three-story medical office building. Spanning a total of 216,236 square feet on a 38-acre campus, the facility delivers critical healthcare services to the growing South Charlotte population.

The goal: The project aimed to expand access to comprehensive medical care in a rapidly developing area. Key objectives included delivering full-service emergency and inpatient care, women’s health services (including birthing suites), advanced surgical capabilities, and enhanced diagnostic offerings within a modern, patient-centered environment.

The design: The campus design reflects a forward-thinking approach to healthcare infrastructure. A partially subterranean structure includes zones reaching up to 18 feet in height, accommodating technical systems and mechanical needs. The Central Utility Plant is fully integrated into the facility to support operational efficiency. The hospital includes three operating rooms, imaging and laboratory facilities, a pharmacy, and a mobile MRI unit. Structural floor systems were engineered to meet rigorous deflection and vibration standards necessary for sensitive surgical and diagnostic equipment. The medical office building is designed for vertical expansion, with capacity for three future floors dedicated to inpatient care.

The outcome: The Novant Health Medical Center establishes a robust, flexible, and future-ready healthcare hub in South Charlotte. By combining state-of-the-art clinical spaces with room for expansion, the facility not only meets current community healthcare needs but is also positioned to grow alongside regional demand.
