The project: In a collaborative effort between the Town of Carrboro and Orange County, a new three-story community facility is being developed to serve as a vibrant hub for education, the arts, and civic engagement. The project transforms a former surface parking lot into a dynamic public space that includes a library, skills development center, performance and multipurpose arts venue, radio station, and teen center.

The goal: The goal of the project is to create an inclusive, multi-functional public facility that fosters lifelong learning, creative expression, and meaningful community connections. By integrating multiple civic programs under one roof, the development aims to enrich the lives of Carrboro and Orange County residents while promoting accessibility, equity, and sustainability.

The design: The facility is designed with both functionality and longevity in mind. A structural steel frame combined with cast-in-place concrete ensures durability and adaptability for future community needs. The building is supported by an integrated parking structure offering over 170 car spaces and 70 bike parking spots. Strategically located along several public bus routes, the site encourages multimodal access and promotes community-wide participation.

The outcome: The new community center reclaims underutilized urban space to create a landmark public destination that embodies Carrboro’s values of creativity, inclusion, and sustainability. By blending cultural, educational, and social services in a single facility, the project is poised to become a cornerstone of civic life for generations to come.
