The project: The City of Bettendorf, IA embarked on a project to transform its aging outdoor aquatic center. The project, known as The Landing, features a modern water park as well as a new permanent ice rink, replacing the portable one previously used. IMEG provided civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design services for the project, which also included infrastructure design for the fit-out of an indoor ski and snowboarding training center in space previously occupied by a department store.

Project amenities: The Landing includes a lap pool, slides, zero depth entry pool, splash area for children, ice skating rink, warming building, concessions building, restroom building, and filter building. The ice rink doubles as an outdoor lounge area in the summer.

Design approach: IMEG worked with the architect and aquatic consultant for collaboration and coordination between disciplines. IMEG conducted 3D model walk-through meetings with the architect which allowed IMEG and the architect to visualize the spaces and coordinate solutions for utility routing.

Additionally, IMEG conducted meetings with the owner and their facility staff to discuss the MEP systems and educate them on the intended system operation. The project was completed in phases and the existing aquatic center had to be completely removed before the new one was constructed.

Unique aspects: The buildings offer the feel of being in a ski lodge, while the multi-function use of the ice rink allows it to be used for additional space during the spring and summer.

Project outcome: The City has a modern, full-service aquatic center and a new, larger ice rink, offering the community and visitors year-round outdoor activities.
