New Platforms and Crew Buildings

The project: Design for five on-grade open commuter rail platforms and two crew buildings.
The goal: Further MBTA’s $9.6 billion, five-year capital investment plan to improve the accessibility of their entire system.
Project features: The design included:
- New electrical services and coordination with utility companies
- New emergency generator systems
- Exterior platform lighting and parking lot lighting to MBTA standards
- Power to VMS, vending machines, elevators, and misc electrical heat
- New EV charging stations
- Power to prefab communication “huts” 10’ x 10’ walk-in metal buildings
- Fire alarm systems where required.
- Heating for selected rooms at the stations
- HVAC for crew buildings
- Bathrooms, kitchenettes, floor & roof drains in crew buildings
- Drainage and sump pumps in elevator pits
- Sprinklers in crew buildings
- Standpipes in platforms
The outcome: Cities and towns in southeastern Massachusetts have passenger rail service for the first time in 65 years.
