New Replacement Hospital

The Glick Center anchors a decade-long campus transformation for MetroHealth. The public hospital and academic medical center in Cleveland is also Ohio’s sole adult and pediatric trauma and burn center.
IMEG was the executive engineer for MetroHealth Transformation, the multi-year, multi-phase renovation plan for the campus. Engineers created a detailed facility assessment of program, building and space needs on the 52-acre urban site. They also developed a first design with recommended system options and evaluated siting selections.
Two months prior to completion of the new center, Turner Construction enlisted IMEG’s commissioning services to provide MEP coordination assistance to their on-site project management team. On-site MEP coordination and scheduling meetings involved Turner, IMEG, and the foreman from each discipline and were held seven days a week until the successful turnover to the owner—a process that was critical to the new hospital opening on time.
The design and construction team deployed Lean, evidence-based and data-driven planning methods to realize MetroHealth’s ambitious vision. The resulting 386-bed, 10-story hospital follows a process-neutral design approach to allow the facility to flex as needs change over the building’s lifetime. Various aspects of the project align with MetroHealth’s commitment to community well-being, including aiding in the establishment of the Latino Construction program and interior and exterior design elements that reflect the local culture and topography.
Despite the criticality of the hospital’s operations, a short timeline driven by aging infrastructure, COVID delays, and a firm budget financed through public bonds, MetroHealth delivered a state-of-the-art facility that modernizes care and uplifts the surrounding community. The LEED Silver center opened in November of 2022 and won the 2025 ASHE Vista Award for New Construction. The award recognizes outstanding innovation and collaboration in healthcare design and construction.
