The project: The new Stoughton High School site plan includes a variety of recreational and educational spaces, such as a football stadium, soccer field, running track, concession plaza, tennis courts, learning courtyards, and entrance plazas. Additionally, a linear park, funded by the Community Preservation Act, enhances the space behind the bleachers and press box, transforming it into a valuable community amenity.

The goal: The purpose of the linear park was to educate residents on green initiatives in an engaging and interactive way. The town aimed to incorporate sustainable design principles while providing a welcoming, passive recreational space for all ages, particularly seniors.

The design: The linear park features a curvilinear walkway with a colorful concrete pattern, set against lush seasonal plantings that draw in visitors. Along the path, there are backed benches for seniors and custom chess tables with seating to encourage passive recreation. Eight custom interpretive and sculptural signs highlight various green infrastructure elements, such as rain gardens and permeable pavement. The plant selection includes a mix of native and low-maintenance adaptable species, reinforcing sustainability. A wind sculpture and a custom park identity sign further enhance the park’s engaging and vibrant atmosphere.

The outcome: The linear park successfully transforms an underutilized space into a dynamic and educational community feature. By integrating sustainability principles into an interactive experience, the park not only provides leisure and learning opportunities but also promotes environmental awareness among residents. The thoughtful design elements create an inviting, low-maintenance, and engaging space that serves as a lasting asset to the Stoughton community.
