New Training Facility
The project: IMEG provided structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design services for a major addition to the USA Baseball complex in Cary, NC. This expansion delivers a year-round indoor training environment and new administrative space.
The goal: The project aimed to create a flexible, high-performance training and operations facility that would serve athletes, coaches, administrators, and the broader community. Designed for year-round use, the building provides advanced training infrastructure alongside modern workspaces and civic amenities.
Project amenities: The 41,000-sf facility includes a 22,000-sf high clear-span indoor infield, a state-of-the-art meeting room known as “The Dugout,” and over 19,000-sf of office, warehouse, and support space for both USA Baseball and Town staff.
The design: The training facility features long-span joist girders and joists supporting a metal deck roof, bearing on a perimeter structural steel frame system with exterior precast concrete walls. The clear-span infield is adaptable to accommodate eight individual pitching and batting lanes. Adjacent to the field, “The Dugout” offers a technologically advanced meeting space, equipped with cameras, a 98-inch display, and seating for up to 24 guests.
The two-story office and warehouse wing houses 14,000-sf for USA Baseball’s executive offices and 5,000-sf for Town of Cary functions, including classrooms, restrooms, showers, and additional support spaces. This portion of the building utilizes a structural steel frame with composite steel beam floors and steel joist/metal deck roofing.
IMEG’s scope included new mechanical systems with high-efficiency packaged rooftop units, contemporary plumbing fixtures, hot water heaters, new electrical service, and modern lighting. A 150kVA rooftop photovoltaic (PV) array was integrated into the design to support sustainability goals.
The outcome: The result is a versatile, high-performance facility that supports both elite-level athletic training and day-to-day operations for USA Baseball and the Town of Cary. Designed with flexibility, comfort, and energy efficiency in mind, the project ensures that the complex remains a national leader in baseball development and administration for years to come.
