New Wellness and Aquatic Center
The Cumberland Park Wellness and Aquatic Center was developed as a community hub for the City of West Lafayette. As a sign
of the community’s dedication to sustainability and inclusion, the Wellness Center ties into the existing Cumberland Park trail system, relocated existing community playground equipment, and includes the state’s first gender neutral, universal bathrooms. The Wellness and Aquatic center features:
- Recreation and therapy pools
- Two indoor basketball courts, multi-purpose athletic court, and elevated running track
- Fitness and weights area with fitness classrooms
- Multi-purpose community rooms
- Child care area
The design for the Wellness Center included provisions for a future expansion that would include an outpatient space for rehabilitation/therapy for a local healthcare partner. The expansion would include exam rooms, rehabilitation gym, and an imaging component. The connection to the Wellness Center would also allow the healthcare providers to take advantage of spaces they would not normally have, including the pool and large gymnasiums.
Sustainable and energy cost saving measures include pool dehumidification unit heat recovery, variable-air-volume air handling systems, exhaust air energy recovery systems, LED lighting, high efficiency condensing hot water heaters, low-flow faucets, flush fixtures, and shower heads.
The pool air handling systems were equipped with a pool deck exhaust evacuation system to purge chloramine from the pool surface. The pool dehumidification units were also provided with pool water heat recovery to pre-heat the pool water with waste heat from the compressors allowing the majority of the pool water heating to occur with no additional energy cost.
