The project: The American Legion Park project was a $2.6 million complete redesign of a beloved community park along Chelsea Creek in East Boston. IMEG led the transformation, reimagining the space into a vibrant, accessible, and multi-use recreational hub while honoring its historical roots.

The goal: The goal was to revitalize a deteriorating park into a dynamic, inclusive, and safe environment for a diverse community with varying needs. The design needed to accommodate both active and passive recreation, address environmental concerns, and celebrate the park’s legacy.

The design: IMEG facilitated a collaborative and lively community engagement process to navigate competing interests and guide the design. Key features include:

  • A synthetic turf combo field for softball and soccer with efficient sports lighting
  • A separate turf court for soccer practice during permitted softball use
  • An accessible walking loop connecting all amenities: a nature-themed playground, two basketball courts, the turf court, bleachers, and a shaded picnic area
  • A dramatic overlook featuring a 12-foot curved mural wall and a cantilevered shade structure with café-style tables for board games and socializing
  • Soil remediation was strategically managed through close coordination with the contractor, minimizing costs and schedule impacts.

Historical preservation was thoughtfully integrated by restoring and retrofitting original 1930s concrete bleachers and site walls to meet modern accessibility standards, including:

  • Wheelchair seating
  • Accessible ramps
  • Custom powder-coated silver and blue railings

The outcome: The redesigned American Legion Park is now a thriving, inclusive, and multi-generational community space. It successfully blends active recreation with opportunities for gathering, play, and reflection. The park honors its historical elements while embracing a bold, new identity that reflects the energy and character of East Boston.
