Playground Renovation
The project: IMEG was hired by the Town of Andover to renovate this small and non-accessible playground.
The goal: The goal of the design was to create a ground-based playground that is visually open and challenging for a range of age groups.
Challenge: The budget constraint for this renovation presented a challenge in maximizing community usage while minimizing cost. Solution: Our team developed a series of design options to be presented to community members and obtain feedback about which design and elements were preferred.
The design: Given its close proximity to the Shawsheen River, the design was inspired by the flowing nature of this natural landmark. Mimicking a stream of water, the safety surfacing varies in shades of blue and gray, creating an asymmetrical path across the playground. The natural boulders scattered throughout and the fish-shaped safety surfacing further allude to the river motif. The picnic area nestled amidst existing and new shade trees is strategically placed in the center of the playground to work as a river overlook for the Lower Shawsheen Playground.
The outcome: The result is a thoughtfully themed and community-informed playground that balances visual design, accessibility, and budget efficiency.
