Playground Renovations
The project: IMEG renovated two separate playgrounds serving ages 2–5 and 5–12, as part of a phased effort at
a school in Andover. The renovations were undertaken as distinct projects but with a unified goal of enhancing play experiences for both age groups.
The goal: The goal of design was to provide a more challenging play for the kindergartens and have a unique play structure for the older children.
Funding: A huge success towards creating unique play structure for the older children was due to the significant funds raised by the PTO group.
Challenge: This project was on an aggressive timeframe and IMEG helped formed a core group of stakeholders during
the design process each representing the different groups of teachers, special ed, students and parents. Solution: IMEG helped the school and PTO group through an iterative process of several design options and budget considerations before finalizing on the final design which involved raising additional funds.
The design: The colors for the play structure along with the solar and galaxy theme safety surfacing pattern were intended to be futuristic along with offering educational inspiration. New site amenities and shade planting was provided throughout the playground. An amphitheater seating and
some nature play was created using the natural existing slope but an accessible walkway loop was provided connecting all
the play elements. This playground has become a destination on weekends for the residents of Andover.
The outcome: Thanks to significant fundraising efforts led by the PTO, particularly for the older children’s structure, the project exceeded initial expectations. The final design balanced creativity, budget constraints, and community input, resulting in a vibrant, multi-functional playground that has become a popular weekend destination for Andover residents.
