The project: IMEG led the evaluation and conceptual redesign of the busy intersection of US Route 1 and CT Route 130 in Fairfield, Connecticut. This critical intersection serves as a major connection between Fairfield and Bridgeport, facilitating north-south traffic and handling over 30,000 vehicles daily. The intersection’s outdated design posed numerous safety issues, while its location near Downtown Fairfield, Bridgeport, and two Metro-North stations made it an essential gateway for multiple local neighborhoods.

The goal: To evaluate the existing intersection conditions, address safety concerns, and develop a conceptual redesign to improve traffic flow, safety, and connectivity. The redesign needed to support the region’s transportation needs, while enhancing the user experience for both drivers and pedestrians.

Design approach: The project involved conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the current intersection, incorporating a data-driven approach to assess traffic patterns, safety issues, and stakeholder concerns. Key activities included:

  • Collecting public and stakeholder input through surveys and meetings
  • Utilizing drone technology to capture hard-to-obtain traffic data
  • Implementing microsimulation analysis using Vissim software to evaluate traffic flow and test potential improvements
  • Creating dynamic visualization videos to effectively communicate the proposed improvements to the public and stakeholders

Project outcome: The project successfully identified key improvements to the intersection’s design, resulting in enhanced safety, smoother traffic flow, and better overall connectivity for the region. Through innovative techniques, such as drone data collection and traffic microsimulation, the team was able to provide a clear, data-driven recommendation. The final product included a detailed traffic impact analysis and an engaging visualization that communicated the recommended changes to the public, helping to garner support and inform future decision-making.
