South Support Building & Parking Garage
The project: This mixed-use logistical hub and parking garage serves the new Indiana University Health downtown hospital and expanded medical campus. The nine-level, open, freestanding hospital garage provides parking for patients, visitors, and staff.
Project program: The logistical support facility occupies the entire basement level and consists of a 22-bay loading dock, logistical hub program spaces, offices, and bulk medical gas storage in an exterior service yard. This logistical level is connected to the hospital via two underground tunnels. One tunnel allows for the routing of utilities from the central utility plant and the other is a materials management tunnel that provides a path for a fleet of autonomous robotic vehicles to ferry supplies to and from the hospital. The ground floor includes a management office and retail storefronts. An elevated pedestrian bridge over West 14th Street provides convenient access to the hospital.
Design approach: The garage consists of a six-bay configuration with ramps located in the second and fifth bays. The functional design includes two-way drive aisles and 90-degree parking stalls throughout. The garage superstructure is a cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structural system. The facades are clad with architectural perforated metal panels in front of the garage openings for natural ventilation.
