The project: The Town of Billerica selected IMEG in March 2021 to renovate their sports complex athletic fields. The project aimed to enhance the facility by transforming it into a multi-generational park that serves as a four-season destination for the community.

The goal: Beyond improving the athletic fields, the goal was to create a dynamic public space that fosters community engagement, supports a variety of recreational activities, and integrates sustainable design elements to protect the surrounding natural environment.

The design: The renovation expanded the complex beyond sports fields by incorporating a flexible lawn space for community events such as movie nights, concerts, and casual open play. The design also included a concession/restroom building with ample passive gathering spaces, including a pavilion shelter.

To further diversify recreational opportunities, a game plaza was introduced with amenities such as a bocce court, ping pong tables, and cornhole games. An accessible nature trail was woven into the landscape, featuring educational signage highlighting key aspects of the surrounding pond ecosystem.

Sustainability: Sustainability played a crucial role in the design, with the planting of native trees to create shade canopies, mitigating the urban heat island effect and promoting biodiversity. Additionally, stormwater management was integrated through visible and functional rain gardens and pollinator gardens.

Client testimonial: “Working with [IMEG] has been tremendous! Not only are they highly knowledgeable, but they are also equally approached. For PHR, what started as an athletic scope project, [IMEG’s] vision was able to transform this into a multi-generational park with diverse uses. We are excited to host children’s summer camp at the renovated park and many more programs” – Dave Grubb, Recreation Director, Billerica Parks and Recreation

The outcome: The renovated sports complex now serves as a vibrant, multi-use destination for all ages. The athletic fields were upgraded for competitive play, while the addition of flexible spaces and recreational amenities encourages broader community use. The integration of nature trails, educational elements, and sustainable landscaping enhances the park’s ecological value while providing a welcoming, inclusive environment for year-round enjoyment.
