The project: Transform the Indiana Convention Center & Lucas Oil Stadium (ICCLOS) into a venue capable of housing Olympic-sized swimming pools. The site will host the upcoming U.S. Olympic swimming team trials.

The goal: Create the infrastructure for design and construction of two Olympic-sized pools while providing enough space for athletes, spectators, and organizers. The event organizers aim to draw a crowd of close to 30,000 attendees for the first night of finals, surpassing previous world records.

Project amenities: This project features a stadium temporarily reconstructed for Olympic-sized pools. The pools required 2 million gallons of water and the venue will have capacity for 30,000 attendees.

Design approach: IMEG worked directly with the owner and pool consultants to support the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing requirements concerning the installation of two temporary Olympic-sized swimming pools within the ICCLOS. Essential aspects such as the ability to fill, heat, and drain the pools within specific timeframes were vital for meeting the construction schedule. IMEG’s design included the incorporation of 8” hydronic heating lines from the existing infrastructure to serve the pools.

Challenge: Filling, draining, and heating the pools within the confines of the existing venue posed a significant challenge.

Solution: IMEG addressed this by designing specialized heating systems and integrating them into the stadium’s infrastructure.

Project outcome: The project was successfully completed on schedule and will allow the U.S. Olympic swim team trials to be held at the ICCLOS. The facility will keep the infrastructure upgrades in place to support future swimming competitions.
