IMEG’s San Francisco structural team (formerly Nishkian Menninger) provided engineering design and services for the Gates Computer Science Building at Stanford University. The building houses the university’s computer research departments, including offices, classrooms, and research facilities. This 150,000-sf steel frame structure is five stories tall, including a basement. The building’s two main entrances reflect a basic division in its internal layout. The main south-facing entrance contains an arched, three-story entry leading to a lobby with stairs and elevators. The east-facing entrance opens to stairs leading down to a lower level where three slopedfloor auditoriums and a variety of flat-floored classrooms are located. The building also includes a 5,000-sf, state-of-the-art computer room and steel window walls allow for natural ventilation.
